Welcome to Cantine's Island

where children and adults thrive

where community is balanced with privacy

At Cantine's Island in Saugerties, New York, eighteen households live co-operatively, sharing the management and much of the work needed for the community.

Our homes are clustered on the upper portion of the property with a beautiful green oval commons at its heart. Twelve single-family homes and three duplexes are owned by their occupants. Most homes have a small 1/10th acre private plot, with the remaining land owned in common.

Community life centers on the Oval and on meals in our Common House. We hold a pot luck once a week and two additional meals that members volunteer to cook. The Common House also hosts our meetings and many celebrations. We have a laundry room and large play area in the basement. Many activities bring our community together in the Common House including making Valentine's cards, tai chi classes, travelogs by members, cookie decorating, games nights, book discussions and more. Individuals can also reserve the Common House for private events.

Decisions about the community are made in monthly meetings by consensus, with several active committees doing much of the groundwork for our decisions.

We participate in occasional workdays to help maintain the gardens and common buildings. Having old and young members work together to restain our garage/workshop, for instance, turned out to be great fun, as well as promoting community spirit.

The Esopus Creek forms the northern edge of our ten acres. From our dock we can swim or boat to the Saugerties Lighthouse and the mighty Hudson River. Upstream, we view the waterfall created by the dam just above our property.

The wooded lower property contains a picnic area, tiny beach, a boating dock and boathouse, an organic vegetable garden, and beautiful flower gardens. The remnants of an historic industrial building house a huge storage area and the workshop for Arm-of-the-Sea puppet theater, a welcome tenant. A new woodland trail runs on a ridge above the creek.
